COURSE FY3403
PARTICLE PHYSICS
Fall 2009
-
Old Exams (in Norwegian only)
-
Teacher:
Jan Myrheim,
E5-102, Realfagbygget, tel. (73 5)9 36 53
-
Earlier midterm exams with solutions (in varied languages)
- Textbook:
D. Griffiths, Introduction to Elementary Particles, Second edition, John Wiley & Sons.
Some parts of the book were not covered in the lectures
and are less relevant for the examination. They are:
- Chapter 5 (Bound States);
- Sections 8.3 to 8.5 of Chapter 8
(Electrodynamics and Chromodynamics of Quarks);
- Chapter 10 (Gauge Theories).
- Prerequisites:
Knowledge of Quantum Mechanics on the level of
FY2045 Quantum Physics or TFY4205 Quantum Mechanics is assumed.
- Recommended (but not required):
FY3402/TFY4285 Subatomic Physics or similar background is an advantage.
- Goal:
To give an introduction to the most central phenomena, concepts and models of
elementary particle physics (as encapsulated in
The Standard Model of Elementary Particle Physics).
- Particle physics on the web
Here
is a good introduction to modern particle physics
(and a taste of the contents of this course).
The Particle Data Group is the
authoritative source of information about
elementary particle physics.
New
evidence for (exotic) dark matter?
(The scientific article can be found here.)
Tools for computer calculations of
particle physics processes.
- Contents (not necessarily in order of teaching)
- The basic matter and messenger particles of the Standard Model.
- Symmetries, invariances and conservation laws.
- The Quark Model.
- Weak interactions.
- Short introduction to group theory, in particular the SU(2) groups for spin and isospin.
- Feynman diagrams.
- Lectures:
Lectures are Wednesday 12:15 - 14:00 in R3 (Realfagbygget)
